Shirakawa-go Light-Up 2027: Dates, Booking & Observation Deck

The 2027 Shirakawa-go Light-Up runs on just four evenings: January 11, 17, 24 and 31, from 17:30 to 19:30 each night. Entry is strictly by advance reservation. No admission tickets are sold on the day, and without a booking you will not get into the village that evening.

There are five ways in, but only two of them get you onto the viewing deck for that classic shot of the whole village lit up in the snow. The first round of car parking went on sale on September 10 and is already sold out. What’s left to aim for is the village accommodation lottery, which opens on October 1, and the light-up buses, which go on sale date by date from October 13.

Shirakawa-go Light-Up 2027 Dates and Bus Sale Times

2027 is the 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up (白川郷ライトアップ). The first night, January 11, is a Japanese public holiday (Coming of Age Day); the other three are Sundays. The lights are on for two hours only, from 17:30 to 19:30.

The event has shrunk from six nights in 2017 to four nights since 2025, so each evening carries more demand than it used to. The table below also shows when the Nohi Bus light-up buses from Takayama go on sale. Each night is sold separately, so make sure you’re booking the right date.

Booking Timeline: The Dates to Watch from October to December

Reservations for the light-up open in stages between September and December. Is it too late to plan for 2027? No, but one option is already gone.

All times are Japan Standard Time (UTC+9). If you’re booking from the US or Europe, a 13:00 JST opening usually falls in the middle of your night, so work out your local time in advance and set an alarm.

Five Ways to Attend the Light-Up: Which One Fits You

Whichever route you take, you end up with the same admission ticket. What differs is whether a viewing deck ticket is included, whether it’s a lottery or first come, first served, and where you start from.

① Stay in Shirakawa-go on the Night (Lottery, Deck Included)

This is the surest way to get a viewing deck ticket, which is why competition is fiercest here. To keep it fair, the Tourist Association runs a lottery instead of first come, first served. The participating guesthouses, prices and entry method are published on the official site at 13:00 on October 1. You apply by email, and entries close at 23:59 on October 31.

Results come out on November 10, and only winners get an email; if you hear nothing, you weren’t drawn. Winners then book and pay by credit card on a dedicated reservation page. The application asks for your preferred date, guesthouse and group size, so agree on those with your travel companions before you send it.

② ③ Driving or Taxi: Reserve the Light-Up Parking Lot

The designated light-up car park is Midashima Parking Lot, and it only takes ordinary passenger cars; minibuses and campervans are not allowed. Cars can enter from 15:00 and must be completely out by 20:00. Pricing comes in two bands, 1–5 people and 6–10 people. Book for 1–5 and turn up with six or more, and you pay an extra ¥4,000 on the day; book for 6–10 and arrive with five or fewer, and the difference is not refunded. Reservations are online only through the Tourist Association’s site, paid by credit card.

Round 1 (September 10) has sold out; round 2 opens at 13:00 on December 1. Check the official site for 2027 prices. For reference, round 2 in 2026 cost ¥7,000 for 1–5 people and ¥10,000 for 6–10. If you want to arrive by taxi, you still need to secure this parking reservation first and then arrange the taxi yourself. Drivers must have studless winter tyres fitted.

④ Bus Company Light-Up Buses (Some Include the Deck)

Light-up buses are special services run by the local route bus companies on event nights. The fare covers the return trip and your admission ticket, and some plans add a viewing deck ticket. For independent travellers without a car, this is the most practical option. Departure points and operators:

Seats go fast. For the 2026 event, Hokutetsu opened sales on October 3 and announced on October 24 that every night was full. Most 2027 prices have not been published yet; for reference, in 2026 the Kanazawa departure with deck access cost ¥17,500 per adult, and the Takaoka departures cost ¥17,000 with the deck and ¥12,000 without. ⑤ Travel Agency Light-Up Tours

The Tourist Association will post links to participating travel agency tours on its site at 13:00 on December 2. You book directly with each agency; the Association does not handle these reservations. Typical packages are one-night trips from Nagoya, Osaka or Tokyo.

Travel agency tours generally do not include the viewing deck. If you’re buying a day tour on a booking platform, check that the listing clearly states both the admission ticket and, if you want it, the viewing deck ticket. If the wording is vague, ask before you pay.

The Viewing Deck: Why Most Visitors Can’t Go Up

The postcard shot of the whole village glowing in the snow is taken from the Ogimachi Castle Ruins viewing deck. During the light-up, numbers on the deck are capped separately. An admission ticket only lets you walk around the village, not climb to the deck, and deck tickets are never sold on their own.

There are only two ways to get one: route ① (staying in the village) or a route ④ bus plan that explicitly includes the deck. Is the light-up worth it without the deck? That depends on what you’re after. At ground level you can stand right beside the farmhouses and see their windows and reflections in the flooded fields up close. If the panoramic shot is the goal, put your energy into the lottery and the bus sale dates. Note too that on some bus plans you walk to the deck and back, which matters if you have limited mobility or small children.

Can You Take a Regular Bus to the Light-Up? No

Nohi Bus states it plainly: after the light-up, there is no route bus back to central Takayama. The last regular highway buses toward Kanazawa leave in the late afternoon, before the lights even come on at 17:30. On light-up days, only buses booked for the event can enter the village after 2 pm.

What to Know on the Night

Your admission ticket comes in a holder you wear around your neck. Each night has its own colour, the ticket is valid for that date only, and you need to keep it on while you walk around. Shirakawa-go is a working village where people live, so drones are banned at all times; stay out of private gardens and away from the eaves of homes.

Shirakawa is in one of Japan’s designated heavy-snow areas, with snow that can pile up close to two metres, and it gets very cold after dark. Wear waterproof boots with good grip. Phone batteries drain fast in the cold, so keep a power bank in an inside pocket.
