Tokyo Tomari: Introducing Wise Owl Hostels Shibuya

Making its appearance as the first spotlight tomari in our new article series, we’re happy to introduce a new generation hostel, Wise Owl Hostels Shibuya. Located an 8 minute walk from Ikejiriohashi Station, and a 4 minute bus ride from the central hub, Shibuya, this hostel provides a peaceful place to lay your head with all the convenience of a central location.

This spot is highly recommended for families and solo travelers alike. Family rooms accommodate up to 4, while dormitories are a good choice for budget travelers. Compared to staying in a hotel, one night at Wise Owl Hostels is a steal. A private room for a family of 4 equipped with bunk beds will cost 15,000JPY, while one night in a dorm bed will go for a mere 3,300-3,500JPY, depending on your choice of mixed or single gender rooms, respectively.

This is not your traditional hostel. For dormitory rooms, each bed is fitted like a chic private room, with enclosed walls, outlets, individual lights for night time reading, packing, or planning for the next day. The hostel design incorporates exposed light bulbs and natural wood throughout to create a warm atmosphere. Amenities are also great for the price: guests are also given free slippers to use when taking a shower or going to the restroom, and did we mention they have free WiFi?

Still not convinced? Recently, we got in touch with a staff member from Wise Owl Hostels Shibuya, and they gave us the history of the hostel and some interesting area recommendations from a local perspective.

Q: Tell us a little bit about how Wise Owl Hostels Shibuya got its start.

‘The thing that travelers need isn’t an accommodation where they can get sub-par sleep for a long period of time. It’s an overall, fulfilling experience during their stay. It’s to get quick, good quality shut eye, so that when they’re not sleeping, they can be out experiencing Tokyo. Night or day, travelers want to elevate the intensity of their experiences in the city. Isn’t that what travel should be?’

This is the concept behind Wise Owl Hostels Tokyo, which first opened in July of 2017 in Hachobori. Wise Owl Hostels Tokyo wants travelers to experience Tokyo with no limits, exploring late into the evening. After success with our first location, the second location, WISE OWL HOSTELS SHIBUYA opened on April 22nd 2017.

We welcomes travelers from all over the world. After having spoken to people from multiple countries, we saw that the things that everyone seems to value during their travels, aren’t the things they can buy, but the new experiences they go home with .

Like our namesake, we try to be ‘wise as an owl,’ and like our feathered friends, we play smart and we like to play late into the night. As I mentioned, since our first opening, one fun-filled year has passed. We’ve held several Meet Up events where guests can get to know locals, art events, and cooking events conducted by professional chefs. When guests stay here and participate in music gatherings, festivals (known as matsuri) they get a taste of that local experience, and we pride ourselves in being a hotel that provides that.

Q: What makes Wise Owl Hostels Shibuya special or different from other hostels?

The hostel is located within walking distance of Shibuya in Ikejiriohashi, an area known for being a favorite residential area for celebrities. In line with our concept of experience over things, this area is incredibly convenient and a great spot to treat as your home base for experiencing the city.

In addition, every bed in our hostel is fitted with a Simmons mattress, meaning you can get quality sleep in a short period of time so that you’re in top shape for your following travels.

Also, we hold frequent international events, such as Meet Up parties on the weekend, cooking events, and seasonal events during Halloween and Christmas.   

Q: Do you have recommendations for restaurants or a particular activity nearby the hostel?

When people think of nightlife in Shibuya, there is no limit to the number  of bars, lounges, clubs you can find, but we have some key recommendations. For electronic lovers, try Womb. A spot where hip-hop aficionados tend to gather is Harlem. And finally, for a place that plays a little bit of everything from every genre, head to Camelot. Several of the staff at Wise Owl Hostels Shibuya love music, so make sure to get individual recommendations once you’re here!

In addition, a nice place to grab a drink close by the hostel is a spot called Sumire (a 10 minute walk from the hostel). On weekdays, you can order a highball or tap beer for just 130JPY, so it’s a good place to get the night started.

Another recommendation for a cafe where you can relax close by the hostel, is The Workers. The food and coffee are great, and the space itself, which also serves as a co-working space, reception hall, etc. is bright and fresh feeling. The space is just a 6 minute walk from the hostel, and sits along the Meguro River.  

And our final recommendation:for a taste of the best seafood, stop by Kaikaya, a 6 minute walk from the hostel. Guests who have stopped by during their stay have given it their top rating.
