Here is an excerpt from the Kansai International Airport official website, featuring a train route map near Kansai Airport.

Although it may seem overwhelming at first glance, you’ll notice that there are only two train lines departing from Kansai Airport: the dark green Nankai Electric Railway and the light green JR trains. We will briefly introduce the characteristics of these two train lines and the stations they serve. We will also provide information on nearby post offices within walking distance from these stations, making it convenient for you to choose a location for Poste Restante service.

Note: “Poste Restante” refers to the service where mail can be held at a post office for pick-up.

Nankai Line (Nankai Electric Railway)

There are three types of trains: Rapi:t Limited Express (α/β), Kūkō Kyūkō (Airport Express), and Local Trains.

Connecting Kansai Airport to Namba Station, one of the major transit stations in Osaka, from Namba Station, you can quickly reach popular attractions such as Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, and Kuromon Market. It only requires one transfer to reach Osaka Station, Umeda Station, and Shin-Osaka Station. The fastest train, Rapi:t Limited Express, takes approximately 34 minutes from the airport to Namba Station, while the Airport Express takes about 45 minutes. The ticket prices are 1450 JPY (Rapi:t Limited Express, regular seat) and 930 JPY (Airport Express), making it one of the most cost-effective ways to travel from the airport to Osaka city.

JR Line

There are two types of trains: Kankū Kōsoku (Kansai Airport Rapid Service) and Haruka Limited Express (Haruka trains, also written as 遥 in Japanese).

Compared to Nankai Electric Railway, the Kankū Kōsoku takes slightly more time, approximately 50 minutes, to reach Tennoji Station in Osaka city, with a minimum fare of 1080 JPY. However, as the JR Kankū Kōsoku and Osaka Loop Line are both operated by JR West Japan, you can travel directly from Kansai Airport to Osaka Station without transferring and easily walk to the Umeda area after getting off. For those staying near Umeda Station or visiting for sightseeing, the JR Kankū Kōsoku is definitely more convenient compared to the Nankai trains that require transfers. Moreover, if you plan to visit Universal Studios Japan (USJ), you can transfer at Nishikujo Station via the Kankū Kōsoku and take the JR Yumesaki Line (JRゆめ咲線).

The Haruka Limited Express provides a direct route without transfers to Shin-Osaka Station and Kyoto. It takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Shin-Osaka Station from Kansai Airport and about 70 minutes to reach Kyoto Station. The ticket prices are slightly higher at 3120 JPY and 3640 JPY respectively. However, for those traveling from Kansai Airport to Kyoto without transferring, the convenience of a direct connection is definitely worth the ticket price.

The Poste Restante/Kyokudome Service

How to Use Poste Restante?

If you will be staying at multiple guesthouses or hotels during your trip (uncertain about your exact location within a specific timeframe) or are unsure if you can receive online purchases at home, you can take advantage of the convenient Poste Restante service.

Find the nearest post office and use its address as the delivery address. Once the package arrives at the post office, you can go and collect it.

Please note that due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are currently no 24-hour operating post offices in Japan. The general operating hours for post offices are Monday to Friday (business days) from 09:00 to 17:00. Some larger post offices may also be open on weekends, but with shorter hours. Make sure to choose a post office where you can collect your package within their operating hours. Alternatively, we recommend having your online purchases/pre-ordered items delivered to your upcoming hotel.

How to Fill in the Address for Poste Restante

Let’s take Osaka Minami Post Office, which we will introduce shortly, as an example. Start by filling in the postal code and the post office address.

Postal Code (郵便番号): 〒542-8799

Address: 1-4-2 Higashi Shinsaibashi, Chuo-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture

Then, add the following line below the address: Osaka Minami Post Office (郵便局留め).

The Japanese [郵便局留め] means you need Poste Restante servece. This way, the post office will know that you intend to use the Poste Restante service and will help store your package.

Writing the address in Japanese will actually be better when you do online shopping or rent a mobile Wi-Fi from a Japanese company. This ensures better accuracy and smoother processing of your packages or devices.

Please note that you must use the name on your identification document to fill in the recipient’s name, such as your passport or, if you have a long-term residence permit in Japan, the name on your residence card.

Inside Kansai International Airport

Although there is no post office located within the terminals of Kansai Airport, if you search on Google Maps, you will find Osaka International Post Office within the airport premises.

However, please note that the Osaka International Post Office is located within the airport restricted area and cannot be accessed on foot. To reach it, you would need to take a dedicated airport bus and undergo identity verification as well as obtain a temporary access permit. This process is time-consuming. Therefore, we do not recommend using the Osaka International Post Office for Poste Restante services at Kansai Airport.

Namba(なんば) Station

From Kansai Airport, if you take the Nankai Railway, your final destination will be Namba Station. Nearby, you will find popular attractions such as Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi Shopping Street, Kuromon Market, and Amerikamura (America Village). From Namba Station, which is very close by, you can also transfer to the Kintetsu Line to visit Nara.

Please note that in Osaka, there are a total of 6 stations called “Namba/なんば,” so it is important to specify that the Namba station reached by the Nankai Railway is written in hiragana as “なんば.” The exact location is No.4, marked by red and orange triangle icons. To reach Namba Station No.3, you can follow the signs inside Namba No.4 and walk underground, which will make it easier to find.
