According to an online conversation between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Keiko Nagaoka yesterday (August 29, 2022), Japan may fundamentally review its previous “300,000 Students in Japan” program in the future, in which the government aims to enroll 300,000 students in Japan each year. In the future, Japan may develop a new plan and admit a relatively larger number of foreign students.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Kishida and Minister Nagaoka exchanged views on the theme of the government’s upcoming conference on creating the future of education. During the discussion, Prime Minister Kishida said that the previous plan of “300,000 international students” will be reviewed and a new plan will be formulated to recruit more international students to Japan to receive higher education in Japan.
In addition, the two discussed how foreign students can be active in various fields in Japan after graduating from Japan and how to promote the internationalization of Japanese education after the graduation of Japanese students abroad.
According to what Minister Nagaoka told reporters after the meeting, discussions on the new plan will begin next month at the earliest, and a preliminary summary of the plan may be issued in the spring of next year.
