JR East has announced on October 6 that a new type of shinkansen will be running from Spring next year as Joetsu Shinkansen between Echigo-yuzawa and Niigata Stations. The “travelling art cafe shinkansen” has been named GENBI SHINKANSEN. GENBI is an abbreviation for Gendai Bijyutsu (modern art). As the name suggests, this shinkansen will be decorated with art works both inside and outside.
The exterior design will be by Mika Ninagawa, a photographer and a movie director. In each car of the shinkansen, the works of seven artists listed below will be exhibited. The works will be created just for this shinkansen.
